To help plan for the upcoming season, here are the 2014 women’s events and tournaments: Preseason (October – December)
  • November 2, 2013 – San Jose St. Friendship Tournament
  • November 9, 2013 – UC Davis Friendship Tournament
  • November 9-10, 2013 – UC Irvine Anteater Invitational
  • November 17, 2013 – Cal Classic at UC Berkeley
  • November 23-24, 2013 – San Diego St. Tournament
  • December 5 – UC Riverside Highlander Tournament
Regular Season (January – April)
  • January 18-19, 2014 – MLK Battle of the Bay at San Jose St.
  • February 8-9, 2014 – NCCVL-W Cross-Over Tournament
  • February 22-23, 2014 – Far Westerns at UC Davis
  • March 9-10, 2014 – NCCVL League Championships
  • March 15-16, 2014 – State Championships (Cal Cup)
  • April 3-5, 2014 – Nationals in Reno, NV
  • Note: the NCCVL and Southern California will have league events during other weekends

U.S. Virgin Islands Invitational

The four CCVC teams returned from the University of the Virgin Islands with hardware in tow.  2013 Virgin Islands Results

The California Men’s All-State team battled St. Kitts to five sets (25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 25-11, 15-8) and defeated the Men’s Alumni team (23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17) on their way to the first seed heading into playoffs.  In the semi-finals, the Men’s Alumni team defeated a tough St. Thomas squad (25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18) while the California Men’s All-State team overcame the tournament host, the University of the Virgin Islands (25-12, 25-21, 25-21).  The two CCVC men’s teams met again in the finals with the Men’s Alumni team defeating the California Men’s All-State team (27-25, 25-22, 25-22).  From the Men’s Alumni team, M. Rogers #11, Utah Valley, S, earned MVP honors and L. Girshfeld #1, UC Davis, OH, was named to the all-tournament team.  J. Semaan #4, San Jose St., L, from the California Men’s All-State team was awarded all-tournament libero honors.

On the women’s side, both CCVC teams made quick work of the competition.  The biggest match of pool play saw the Women’s Alumni team defeat the California Women’s All-State team (25-18-25-22, 25-19) as the Women’s Alumni took the pool.  In the finals of the tournament, the California Women’s All-State team had their revenge by defeating the Women’s Alumni team in a thrilling five set match (21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13).  The two women’s CCVC teams were heavily represented in the all-tournament team.  J. Dinaro, #2, UCSB, S, and J. Matasci, #7, Cal Poly, L, from the California Women’s All-State team were named MVP and all-tournament libero.  Other players from the California Women’s All-State team earning all-tournament honors were B. Anderson #21, UC Berkeley, MBH, B. Beckett #4, UCSB, MBH, and K. Beals #5, San Diego St., OH/RS.  On the Women’s Alumni side, S. McCabe, #3, Sonoma St., S, was named to the all-tournament team.

U.S. Virgin Islands: Women’s All-State Players

The CCVC is pleased to announce players from this year’s CCVC California Women’s All-State team who will be representing the state of California at the tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands over Labor Day weekend.

National Championships Recap

The 2013 National Championships were held in Dallas, Texas.  29 men’s teams and 23 women’s teams from California attended. 

Men’s Division 1 featured an all-California final with Fresno St. battling UCSB.  Fresno St. defeated UCSB (25-21, 25-16) to bring home the Men’s Division 1 Championship to compliment its California State Championship and Northern California league title.  C. Hughes #9 (RS, Fresno St.) was named National MVP.  The gold bracket was well-represented with California squads: UCSD (3rd), UC Irvine (5th), Cal Poly (9th), Long Beach (9th), Sacramento St. (9th), and UC Berkeley (9th).

Men’s Division 2 (for colleges with less than 14,000 students) saw Sonoma St. finish 2nd in the country and Azusa Pacific finish 5th.  In Men’s Division 3 (for universities with a second squad), Cal Poly II and UC Berkeley II both finished in 3rd place. 

Women’s Division 1 had a strong showing from California teams: UCSB (3rd), Cal Poly (9th), San Diego St. (9th), UC Irvine (9th), and UC Davis (17th).  Women’s D1AA featured three California teams in the gold bracket: UC Berkeley (5th), UCSD (5th), and Long Beach (9th).  Women’s D1AAA saw Chico St. finish in 5th place.  In Women’s Division 2 (for schools with a second squad), Cal Poly II finished in 5th place and UC Davis II finished in 9th place. 

Congratulations to all teams for a successful season.  The 2014 National Championships will be in Reno, NV.
