- ABOUT
- The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Tournament: Since 2001, the UVI has hosted the Labor Day Invitational with university and national teams attending from throughout the Caribbean. All-star teams of men and women club players from around the country, as well as alumni squads, have attended the tournament since 2005. The alumni women won the event in 2009 and 2010. The tournament takes place at the UVI campus on St. Thomas in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Tournament Format: The format is round robin with a playoff and championship. All matches scheduled to allow teams to sight see. The number of matches varies from year-to-year based on the number of teams attending, but 4-5 matches over two days is the norm. At the conclusion of the round robin, the teams with the best record participate in a playoff to take home the championship trophy. Players are awarded additional honors for their play such as best server, passer, hitter, and MVP.
- Teams Attending: In the past, teams from St. Kitts, Anguilla, Antigua, UVI, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Maarten, Puerto Rican teams, and the U.S. mainland, amongst others, have attended.
- HOW TO PLAY
- Our goal is to send 4 teams to the tournament. The two all-state teams consist of club volleyball players who were selected to the Men’s California All-State team or the Women’s All-State team by the California Collegiate Volleyball Conference or received other league honors. The two alumni teams consist of current club volleyball players who attended the tournament in the past or former club volleyball players who have recently graduated, but did not play previously. Travel: Most flights from San Francisco and Los Angeles fly through Miami to St. Thomas (STT). American has flexible options and competitive rates. Players are responsible for paying the cost of a round-trip ticket. Once there, the teams have rental cars and utilize taxis to take players to/from the gym and airport, and to any beaches or other sites (Magen’s Bay, Blackbeard’s Castle, St. John’s).
- Hotel: The team stays at the Best Western Emerald Beach, close to the UVI gym and right on the beach. Players stay 3-4 per room. The hotel has an on-site restaurant and bar, and is close to shops and restaurants in Charlotte Amalie.
- Cost: Players pay for their flight to/from St. Thomas. In addition, players make a deposit to the CCVC to cover the cost of the entrance fee, hotel rooms, rental cars, jerseys, and warm-up shirts. Players also should bring additional money for food, taxis, and sightseeing.
